The May parade was one of the biggest annual events in the former GDR. It was the time to show the achievements and progress made by the country’s production sector, its co-operatives and its people (‘Held der Arbeit’). It was also parading time for the state organized youth clubs like the ‘Freie Deutsche Jugend – Free German Youth’.
The people could catch a glimpse of the country’s leader, Erich Honecker, and other senior members of the government.
