After graduating from high school I finished a 3-year apprenticeship as a silk-screen printer and lithograph, followed by work experience as a professional printer.  Interested in further developing my visual skills, I began my university studies of photography in 1987 at the department of photography in Dortmund, Germany. In my third year I was granted a scholarship to study for one semester at the Parson School of Design in New York. After graduating from University, I went to Paris to develop an artistic installation project, including still pictures, moving images and sound. This 6-month stay was financed by a grant from the DFJW. After my stay in Paris, I was accepted as a post-graduate student at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne (KHM). During the 2-year program I focused on video, installation and sound.

After graduation from KHM, I established my own video-production company where I developed and produced video-documentaries and video-installations for museums and other institutions.

A couple of years later, I got into teaching; first as assistant lecturer at the Bauhaus University Weimar, later as full professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Kaiserslautern, Department for Digital Media. In 2002, I changed to the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Faculty of Design, where I am responsible for developing of and teaching in the field of ’moving images’.

From 2007 till 2010 I spent three years in China, working as a part-time lecturer in the ‚International MA Photography Program’, a joint venture between Bolton University, UK and Dalian Medical University, China.

After coming back to Germany, I resumed my teaching position in the field of Moving Images at the Faculty of Design in Darmstadt. I published two books, one about Interactive Narrative (2013), and most recently, one about alternative photographic processes used by artists today (under the open sky: Artists working with alternative photography, 2017).

My work as visual artist continuously centers around and questions the human condition as well as the beauty and fragility of nature.
